Built in 1904 on Corporation Street in the heart of Birmingham's Civic Quarter, West Midlands, UK, Central Hall spent decades as a gathering place before falling silent. Closed as the Que Club Nightclub, it sat empty and at risk for years. Civis UK is leading the effort to restore the building as a civic and cultural institution.

The restored Central Hall will combine heritage preservation with public programming, creative production, education, hospitality, and community access. Its spaces will hold performance, exhibitions, civic dialogue, making, learning, and cultural enterprise side by side.

The project is built around a public-benefit model in which commercial activity sustains civic purpose. Revenue from venue use, hospitality, studios, events, and creative enterprise will support public access, cultural programming, artist development, and the institution's long-term resilience.

Central Hall extends a strategy already underway across Civis's portfolio. Like Civis's other historic building activations, it takes an at-risk landmark building, asks what collective responsibility the community has toward preserving the site and its history, and then builds a new civic institution as a thesis of its own. Each of these sites is seeded to eventually operate on its own local footing, but together they test the same conviction: that historic buildings can be stewarded forward as living civic infrastructure while preserving a connection to the past.

The project is an early expression of Civis’s developing institutional thesis: that interdependence is not simply a social condition, but a practical method for rebuilding institutions of public purpose. At Central Hall, commercial enterprise, cultural production, and civic dialogue are conceived not as competing uses, but as mutually sustaining parts of a single institution.  Corporation Street—at the centre of a city long shaped by culture, industry and exchange—provides a fitting setting for the first application of this approach in UK. Restored for the present, Central Hall can once again become a public home for Birmingham’s civic life and a working model of an interdependent future.  

In keeping with the Civis portfolio, Central Hall will become a place for encounter, making, exchange, and participation across difference—a public hall for Birmingham's next generation.
